We are writing to solicit your interest in participating in the Second Annual Mindfulness Conference that will be wrapped into the 2018 SEALS Meeting at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The final dates of the Mindfulness Conference have not been determined yet, but likely will span two days within the date range of the SEALS conference, Aug. 6-12, 2018. The current plan calls for the first day of the Mindfulness Conference to be a day of programming and the second day to be a half-day of programming and a half-day of retreat.
We invite proposals for panels on a variety of mindfulness topics. For example, by way of suggestion and not by limitation, you might propose a panel on one of these topics, or propose a completely new panel concept:
- Mindfulness and Diversity
- Yoga Practice in Law School
- Mindfulness and Contemplative Practices
- Mindfulness in Legal Writing Education
- Mindfulness in Clinical Teaching
- Mindfulness Across the Curriculum
- Mindfulness and Work-Life Balance
- Mindfulness in Turbulent Political Times
- Mindfulness and Scholarship
- Mindfulness and Mental Health in the Legal Profession
- Mindfulness Improv [a panel that develops improvisationally through panel leaders and audience participation]
To propose a panel, please send a brief summary of your panel program description, proposed presenters, individual presenter topics, and school affiliations to Program Co-Chair, Prof. Heidi K. Brown, at heidi.brown@brooklaw.edu (with SEALS Mindfulness Conference Proposal in the email reference line) by Friday October 13 at 5 p.m. EST. Each panel will be allotted approximately 75 minutes, and all proposed formats are welcome and will be considered. Again, we invite proposals on any relevant topics on mindfulness that are not already listed above. We will endeavor to notify all applicants of the final conference schedule by October 31, 2017.
We are thrilled about the opportunity to host this Mindfulness Conference. As many of you surely know, SEALS is always a great family-friendly conference at a five-star facility on the Atlantic Ocean. We will provide information about room rates and the SEALS registration fee for members and non-members as soon as possible.
We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at SEALS next year.
Mindfulness in Law Schools Conference Program Co-Chairs,
Professors Katerina (“Katya”) Lewinbuk & Heidi K. Brown
PS: Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested. If they are not already a member of the AALS Balance Section Mindfulness Affinity Group, they can sign up at no cost, and send an email to AALS asking to be added to the Balance Section, which sponsors the MAG.
