Breakers Rooms

For those who are interested, there are SOME rooms available for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights of the meeting. In addition, The Breakers is hopeful that rooms will eventually open up for the other nights (when? Don’t know). So, even if you are wanting to stay at The Breakers for the entire week, you might book for these three nights and try to expand your reservation later.

For those who were unable to obtain rooms at The Breakers, we have arranged for overflow accommodations at the Ritz-Carlton (Palm Beach) http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/PalmBeach/Default.htm and the Brazilian Court hotel http://www.thebraziliancourt.com/ The price is $159 per night at both resorts. Please note that the room blocks will not open until Friday or Saturday at the Ritz.

Since we cannot guarantee how many attendees will get off of the waiting list, or whether anyone else will get off, I would encourage you to consider these other properties. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks,

SEALS Committee Nominations

The Southeastern Association of Law Schools has a very active committee structure that is critical to the organization’s success. All appointments are for one year. If you have faculty who would be a good fit for one or more of the committees, please let me know. Self-nominations are permitted.

The committees are listed below. Please bear in mind that we receive LOTS of nominations for certain committees (far more than we can actually appoint), particularly the New Scholars and Mentor committees.

New Scholars Committee (which coordinates participation in the New Scholars Workshop)
Beginning and Newer Law Teachers Committee (which coordinates panels targeted to newer law teachers)
Prospective Law Teachers Committee (which coordinates workshops to assist individuals applying for entry-level faculty positions)
Mentors Committee (which appoints mentors for New Scholars)
Moderators Committee (which finds moderators for SEALS panels)
Hospitality Committee (which scouts out restaurants and other attractions near SEALS hotels)
International Committee (which seeks to stimulate international connections on behalf of SEALS schools, and attract foreign scholars to the SEALS meeting)
Caribbean/Latin America Committee (which does the same thing as the International Committee, but with a particular focus on Caribbean and Latin American countries)
Call for Papers (selection committee which determines the winners in the Call for papers competition)
Hospitality Committee; Program Advisory Committee (which advises me about how to proceed when difficult or sensitive issues arise with regard to the SEALS program)
Sponsorship Committee (which helps find sponsors for our annual meeting)
Website Committee (which coordinates and makes recommendations regarding SEALS’ website)
Technology Committee (which helps advise SEALS about how to respond to technological advances)
Distance Learning Committee (which coordinates distance learning between SEALS law schools and coordinates the SEALS Distance Learning Expo)
Program Formatting Committee (which edits and formats the program)
Hispanic Outreach (which reaches out to Hispanics, and tries to stimulate Hispanic participations in SEALS)
Inclusiveness Committee (which addresses various diversity and inclusiveness issues for SEALS)

Breakers Reservations

Although SEALS increased the size of our room block for this year, we are currently at or near capacity. Here is my best advice: Go to the hotel room reservation site and see if you can get any of the nights you are seeking. Try requesting them one-by-one, night-by-night. That way, you won’t have to wait list for all of your nights. My best guess is that you’ll ultimately get all of the nights you are seeking. We have a penalty date after which reductions or cancellations of hotel stays result in a penalty. Usually, at or after this date (May 15th), the waiting list clears. For those who are willing to stay elsewhere, overflow accommodations are available at the Brazilian Court hotel.

Discussion Group Call – New Voices in Labor and Employment Law

The Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS) is pleased to host the first annual “New Voices in Labor and Employment Law” program during the August 2013 SEALS Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. The purpose of this works-in-progress program is to bring together junior and senior labor and employment law scholars to help the junior scholars ready papers for the upcoming law review submission cycle.

For this program, we are seeking submissions from labor and employment law scholars with five or fewer years of full-time teaching experience (not counting the 2012-13 academic year). Submissions should be drafts of papers relating to labor and employment law that will be near completion by the time of the SEALS meeting in August 2013.

To be considered for participation in the program, please send an email to Professor Michael Green, Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, at mgreen@law.txwes.edu and to Professor Paul Secunda, Marquette University Law School at paul.secunda@marquette.edu by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday, January 7, 2013. In your email, please include the title of your paper, a short description of the context (e.g., “Employee Privacy in the Digital Age”), and a full abstract. Full-time faculty members of SEALS member or affiliate member schools, who have been teaching labor and employment law courses for five or fewer years as of July 1, 2012, will be given a preference in the selection of those contacted to submit final papers.

To ensure an atmosphere conducive to feedback, space will be limited to 15 participants; any additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list and invited to participate on a space available basis only. Those individuals accepted into the program must submit a complete draft by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Friday, May 31, 2013. Please submit your drafts electronically to the email addresses above. The draft should be accompanied by a cover letter with the author’s name, contact information, and confirmation that the submission meets the criteria identified in this call of papers. Submissions are limited to a maximum 40,000 word limit (including footnotes). Submitted in-progress papers can be committed for publication prior to their submission, as long as they are not actually scheduled to be printed prior to August 1, 2013. Each professor may submit only one paper for consideration. No papers will be accepted after the deadline, and no one may participate without submitting a draft by the deadline above.

Discussion Group Call – Dealing with the Financial Crisis

In the wake of the 2008 fiscal crisis, Europe and the U.S. took quite different paths. While the U.S. Congress opted stimulus, as did the Federal Reserve Board, and Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act, Europe took a quite different and somewhat winding approach to the problem. Initially, European nations quarreled about whether they could or should coordinate their regulatory schemes. Over time, the fiscal crisis emboldened centralized organizations (EU-wide regulators), and pushed Europe towards sector by sector regulatory answers. This approach contrasts with the Dodd-Frank Act, a single overarching law that directs agencies to adopt more precise rules and practices. At the same time, the EU has to deal with internal debates regarding the efficiency of its own models, as well as with a debt crisis originating in its own political failures. The practice of the European Commission had also to be adapted as regard to the question of State aids to banks and to State liability. This discussion group will focus on the very different approaches that Europeans and Americans adopted in response to the financial crisis.
