Overflow Accommodations for 2011 (including villas)

For the upcoming SEALS meeting, which will be held at the Marriott Oceanfront Resort (Hilton Head, South Carolina), we have arranged overflow accommodations at the Palmetto Dunes Resort.  http://www.palmettodunes.com/ They can be booked using this reservation form.

The advantage of Palmetto Dunes is that they offer one, two and three-bedroom villas (as well as oceanfront houses).  So, if you’re coming with kids or family, and don’t want to be limited to a hotel, Palmetto Dunes provides a good option.  The villas have kitchens and living rooms, and some have washer and dryer.

Palmetto Dunes’ rates vary depending on the length of stay 1) Week – $140 per villa per night for either the one or two-bedroom villas, and $195 per night for a three-bedroom villa (oceanfront is $195 per night); 2) 5-6 days – $195 per night for a one bedroom, $215 per night for the two bedroom, and $245 for a three bedroom (oceanfront is $275 per night  for a one bedroom and $290 per night for a two bedroom.  The resort does not offer shorter stays.

Room Block for HIlton Head 2011

The Board of Trustees has asked me not to open the room block at the Marriott until the final program has been released (probably end of September or early October).  In prior years, since the room block was opened before the program was available, large numbers of attendees would simply book for the entire week (even if they only planned to come for a few days) in order to make sure that they had all of the nights that they would need.  Some would not adjust their reservations until the following summer.  In the meantime, we would have a large number of attendees who could not get into the conference hotel until summer (causing great frustration on their part, and some cancellations).  As a result, this year, we will post the final program and wait a week or two before we actually open the room block (in the hope that attendees will book only the nights they actually need).  When the block does open, I will announce the opening first on the blog.  So, if you are not subscribed, please do so.  If you do, you’ll be the first to know about the opening.  Thanks,

18.08.2010 Call for Papers, SEALS 2011 No Comments

Call for Papers

The Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS) invites the submission of papers in response to its annual Call for Papers.  As in the past, those who submit the best papers will be asked to present them at our next annual meeting which is scheduled for July 24-30, 2011, at the Marriott Oceanfront Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement.

Submissions may be on any topic related to law and may involve either an unpublished paper or an abstract.  However, in the past, the panel of judges has tended to favor completed papers over promising abstracts.  The submission deadline is December 1, 2010, and notifications will be made by February 1, 2010.

If you have questions about the Call for Papers, please feel free to contact Russ Weaver by phone (502-852-6559), fax (502-852-0862) or e-mail (russ.weaver@louisville.edu).

Mentors for 2011

Greetings.  Now that we are back from another wonderful SEALS meeting, the Mentor Committee would like to thank all of this year’s mentors and new scholars.  We’re also starting on next year’s program already.  The SEALS 2011 meeting will be held at The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa in Hilton Head, South Carolina, from July 24 to July 30, 2011.  The New Scholar program continues to grow in popularity, and in order to make it as strong as possible it’s important for us to maintain a list of existing mentors, as well as identify new mentors who are committed to enhancing the quality of this program.  If you were not a mentor this last year and would like to be one, please email bbarton@utk.edu with your name, your area(s) of expertise, and your contact information (phone, email, address). If you have been a mentor, but don’t want to be one again, you can also email us that information.

A few notes from Russ about the upcoming meeting

With SEALS just a few days away, I’m sure that everyone is busily packing in preparation for leaving.  I just wanted to remind you of several things.  First, for those who were unable to obtain a room at the Breakers, the Breakers is offering you access to the resort facilities (e.g., pool, beach, etc.).  However, you will need to present your SEALS badge in order to gain that access. Second, the Breakers is offering a special rate ($10 per day) for valet parking.  Unfortunately, as I learned after I arrived, they no longer offer free parking.  Third, the Breakers is offering our group a variety of other discounts.  The Breakers will be providing our registration staff with a list of those discounts to be provided to you.  Have a safe trip!

Very Important – Hotel Room Cancellation Deadline Approaching

From Russ Weaver:

Regarding the Breakers.

First (important warning): As of June 1st, the Breakers will charge a second deposit against your credit card (so that the resort will be holding a two night deposit). This deposit is nonrefundable, and will apply to both cancellations of reservations as well as reductions.  In other words, if you reduce your room reservation by two nights after June 1st, the Breakers will apply your deposit to the released nights.  So, if you need to make changes, PLEASE do it now.  There are lots of folks still seeking rooms.

Second, a number of people have called the Breakers in the last week regarding the rooms that recently opened up.  The Breakers intends to accommodate those who are on the waiting list (some of whom have been there for quite some time) before accommodating new requests.

Finally, and importantly, for those who are unable to get into the Breakers at this time, backup hotels are listed on our website:  http://sealslawschools.org/  Some of these hotels are VERY nice, are offering very good rates, and provide quality alternatives.

May 7th Updated Version of SEALS Program

Message from Russ Weaver, Executive Director of SEALS:

With a big thanks to Chad Emerson (and his Program Formatting Committee), here is the most recent draft of this year’s program.  If you have changes (and I’d appreciate it if you’d widely circulate this draft to colleagues, panelists, friends), please let us know ASAP.  We will be accepting program changes through June 1st, but then will move the program into the printing process.  Changes submitted after that date will be listed on an errata sheet.

Breakers Pool and Beach Will Be Available for Offsite Hotel Guests

The Breakers has agreed to allow families of conference attendees who stay at overflow hotels to use The Breakers pools.

The Breakers is still working out the logistics on how they are going to give access to families, however they are going to allow the overflow hotels to have access to their pool area.
